Neither the obvious signs the Jews required nor the "head-trips" the Greeks loved had the eternal effect of salvation the crucified Christ had.
Someone told the story of a student and his pastor who went to hear Toyohiko Kagawa, the great Japanese Christian, speak at a university. After the lecture, the student mentioned to his pastor that he wasn't super-impressed by what he heard. Nothing new or unusual had been said. But he noted Kagawa's thick lenses on his spectacles and remembered that his eyes had been permanently damaged in his service to Christ. He remarked, "I guess when a man is bearing his cross he doesn't have to say much." A man on a cross, Jesus Christ, has the effect of keeping our eyes upon him rather than upon signs. Also, our knowledge will pass away, but he shall remain.
