Anecdote's and reminiscences about Napoleon Bonaparte's character and manners are numerous. During his final exile and bout with terminal cancer on the island of St. Helena, he dictated memoirs and biographical material that were sometimes contradictory. However, his military skill and his impact on western civilization were immeasurable. Although he was a ruthless warrior who was responsible for millions of deaths, he was also a brilliant organizer and planner. In his last years he was quoted as saying, "The heroes of old times were all men, just as I am a man. Jesus was different. There was no one else like him. He was more than a man. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne and myself all founded great empires, but on what did these creations depend? On force! Only Jesus founded an empire on love and because of that there are millions today who would die for him."
