Andrew Newberg, a professor of radiology at the University of Pennsylvania, has teamed with psychiatrist and anthropologist, Eugene d'Aquili, to test the human brain in an attempt to prove the existence of a "higher reality." They have used an imaging technology called SPECT to map the brains of Tibetan Buddhists meditating and Franciscan nuns engaged in prayer. The scans have shown activity in the brain indicating a spiritual connection as real to the brain as any perception of ordinary reality.
