Andrew Johnson is sometimes referred...
Andrew Johnson is sometimes referred to as "the accidental President." On March 4, 1865, Andrew Johnson was inaugurated as Vice-President of the United States. Six weeks after the inauguration, on April 15, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated. Johnson became president just as the War between the States came to an end. Johnson was a Democrat, a Southerner, and a slaveowner. He had a strong sympathy for the South, although he remained loyal to the Union when his state, Tennessee, seceded. Many scholars consider Lincoln to be the greatest President in the history of the United States.
