In ancient mythologies, Wisdom is almost always feminine. In Persia, her name was Ma; in Egypt, Ma'at; in Greece, Minerva. She was exalted as the best and most profitable gift God might give a person. And if God did not give the gift, she was nearly unattainable. The quest of kings and scholars to gain wisdom are many in the ancient literature. In Egypt, in fact, everyone who died had to pass the ultimate test to gain eternal life. Ma'at, whose hieroglyph is a feather, would weigh the heart of the deceased on her balance scale, with the counterweight being her feather. To gain eternal life, one's heart had to be no heavier than that delicate counterweight. -- Herrmann
