An ancient Jewish saying holds that we are born with our hands closed; we die with them open.
Clutching only our palms, we come into the world. Having accumulated for a while, we die with hands outstretched. As infants, the world comes to us without our grasping it. When aged, no matter what we grasp of the world, our hands open as we become infirm and it slides from us.
The secret to the good life is to find out those things which we keep with open hands.
