Amy Tan broke into the literary world with the enviable feat of making it to the best-seller lists with her first novel. Her second novel, The Kitchen God's Wife, was one more opportunity for the author to share with us insights into the culture, customs and rituals of the Chinese people and their acculturation to America. Much of the story is the confession of a mother recalling her life in China. The settings for her tale date from the days prior to and during the Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese Revolution and World War II.
