Amos was a layman. He was a farmer and shepherd, and brought his products to trade in the cities of Israel. The luxurious living he observed appalled and deeply troubled him. The lack of concern by the well-to-do for the oppressed and unfortunate aroused his anger. Amos was moved to speak out bluntly and forthrightly in the name of God against the injustice he observed.
