Among the many items that have been kept which belonged to Abraham Lincoln is the big family Bible. Lincoln used it during the difficult days of his presidency when the nation was rent by the Civil War. Like all books, it falls open easily to the page to which its owner turned most often. There is even a smudge on that page, suggesting that often a hand rested on it. The page contains Psalm 34: "I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears." Someone counted the "fear nots" in the Bible and said there are 365, one for every day of the year. It is nice to have so many, but this single verse is sufficient for all our dangers and all our anxieties. Deliverance from fear comes with a sense of the presence of the Lord. The initiative is ours. We must seek the Lord if we want to escape our fears. -- Shannon
