Ambassadors in the Roman Empire...
Illustration
Ambassadors in the Roman Empire were understood to be the personal representatives of the Emperor himself. When Paul claims to be speaking for Christ, he is claiming the same high degree of authority. When he speaks, it is as if Jesus were speaking through him. As Christians, "we are Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us." Through us, the Christian plea is being made. This appeal has the force of imploring, even begging. How else do people find out about Jesus? It is only through us. We are the mouth, hands, and feet of God. Do you know people who need to hear about the benefits of Christ's presence in their lives? The ministry of the church is to reconcile human beings to God. Take the initiative to invite someone to church for the journey beyond the cross -- to the empty tomb of Easter.
