Although the play (and the movie) "Godspell" is primarily based upon the Gospel of Matthew, the spirit of this contemporary musical applies to the four Gospels in their account of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. If there is one theme that permeates "Godspell" it is that to respond to the good news is like accepting an invitation to a party. To be a Christian is to be filled with unspeakable joy. In this interpretative play Jesus draws symbols on his disciples' faces, wears a painted heart on his own forehead and has tears of a clown under his eyes. He calls his disciples and they go dancing and singing through the city, sharing life together. Each person is an individual in his or her own right and all of them exude the effervescence of their new life in Christ.
