Alexander I, the Czar of Russia during and following Napoleon's unsuccessful invasion of his country, went to Paris after the war had ended. With Napoleon defeated, the Czar attended anniversary celebrations at one of the hospitals. The women who had organized the event passed the plate around for contributions. An extremely pretty girl was delegated to take a plate to the Czar. Alexander dropped in a handful of gold and whispered, "That's for your beautiful bright eyes." The young lady curtsied and immediately presented the plate again. The Czar looked surprised and said, "What?
