Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Circleville, Ohio, is named for a beautiful stained glass window of the Good Shepherd with his sheep. Its counterpart can be seen in many churches throughout the land. At night the window is lighted so that passers-by may see the picture and be blessed by it.
Beautiful as a stained glass window may be, it takes light to bring out its beauty. The workmanship may be, and often is, superb. But the window is a human creation. Its glory comes not from humans nor of itself alone, but from the light that streams through.
John the Baptist was not the Light, but came to bear witness to that Light which can light the soul of every person. Just as it is the light shining through that makes a window beautiful, so it was the coming of Christ which make John the Baptist important.
People make the common mistake of confusing the medium with the message. John had quite a time with the Pharisees and others trying to help them understand he was making a way for the coming of the Lord. As pastors, we, like John, must let the Light shine through our ministry to guide humankind to God.
