After a two-month period of minor eruptions, Mount Saint Helens exploded on May 18, 1980, belching smoke and debris more than 60,000 feet into the air in a horrifying display of nature's fury. Twenty-two human beings, countless numbers of animals, and one hundred twenty-two acres of living vegetation were utterly destroyed, then buried in layers of grey ash.
