Adolf Hitler may have invented the phrase, "Resistance is futile." As he rose to power in the 1930s he tried to break the will of the world. At his mountain retreat, the Berchtesgaden, he was demonstrating his charisma to an envoy from Britain. Hitler boasted, "My soldiers are devoted to me! They will obey my every whim! Any soldier in my army would gladly die if I but nod in his direction! Look here!" He pointed to a soldier. "Private! Jump out the window!" In a trice the soldier was out the window plummeting to his death. The British envoy was horrified.
