In A.D. 1015, Canute the son of King Sveyn of Denmark invaded and conquered England. One year later he was crowned King of England. History tells us that he was a powerful and wise monarch. Although his reign lasted for only about twenty years, during that time he became king also of Denmark and Norway, established a rule of law in England, and made a peace treaty with the Holy Roman Empire. He was an enlightened and forward-looking monarch. What we remember most about King Canute, however, is a legend.
