An acquaintance served as mayor...

An acquaintance served as mayor in a small town. One night he received word that a member of the council had made arrangements with the other board members to fire the town's police chief at the next night's council meeting. The police chief had offended the council member by rightfully arresting him for driving under the influence of alcohol. The member of the town board had a questionable past, but had endeared himself to the community through the regular provision of "favors." Impeachment of the council member wasn't likely and the mayor didn't think he could prevent the vote.
So the mayor acted quickly, arranging a new and better job for the police chief with another municipality. The evening of the meeting, the chief was able to tender his resignation prior to being fired by the council. The mayor's dealings with the council members are an example of shrewdness, but unlike the manager in the parable, his shrewdness was used for the good of someone else.
