To accept the grace of...

To accept the grace of God in a life-changing way is to be confronted decisively with the passionate love of God. It can be so intimidating that we encounter it in vain, and fail (or refuse) to be changed by it. Beatrice Campbell, the British actress who created the role of Eliza Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, once made a North American tour. She was escorted to dinner by a shy, unobtrusive gentleman who was overwhelmed by her presence and wit. Sensing his discomfort, she turned to him and, in a commanding voice, asked, "Tell me: which would you sooner do -- love passionately or be loved passionately?" Her escort took a deep breath, hesitated, then replied, "I'd rather be a canary." -- Bolton
