At 94, Father Pierre (Henri Groues) died in France 1/22/07. His life and ministry in many
ways paralleled Jeremiah's. In WWII he was in the French Resistance. After the war he
condemned his nation for ignoring the unfortunate. He stimulated society's concern,
raising money to aid the needy. Father Pierre started the Emmaus movement, helping
poor people and homeless refugees.
He threw himself into the care of the needy and communicating to the world the painful needs of the poor. Father Pierre's Emmaus movement numbered 350 by 2006 in nearly forty countries, 110 in France.
No matter the circumstances, like Jeremiah he criticized the government and his church in the name of God. In all things, this imperfect Roman Catholic priest was, like Jeremiah, directed by his faith. He said, "I believe that the Eternal is Love all the same, and we are loved all the same, and we are free all the same."
