At 21 years of age Bruce could see no need for God. He had it all figured out. He was sufficient unto himself. At 31 Bruce had a different view of things. He was experiencing personality conflicts at work; his children were challenging his wisdom; his bank account was more difficult to balance; and for the first time in his life he was considering his obvious need for dieting and exercise. Everyone who knew Bruce realized that he was a balanced and wise person. He was aware of his inadequacies in the face of life's complexities. He now found a need for God, a higher power outside of himself, and for a spiritual community of persons who understood what he was feeling and who supported him through all of his hopes and fears.
