The 1992 movie, Leap of Faith, tells the story of a traveling evangelist who used every trick, including sophisticated electronic equipment to prompt him in his selection of those to be healed and plants in the audience to excite the crowd, in order to have the appearance of a miracle-worker. When the local sheriff arrives to deliver a warning to the preacher that he's "on to your tricks, my man. Don't do anything to cheat these people." the preacher's rejoinder is that his job is "to give these people a good show, to relieve the tedium of their lives.
