In 1954 Roger Banister was the first person on record ever to break the four-minute mile, as he completed the course in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. But since then, new records have been set at least 16 times, to the point where the record now stands at 3 minutes and 46 seconds. Does that mean that people born in recent decades are just quicker than ever before in history? I do not think so. I believe that those runners have gone faster because they had a challenge that was set before them. And that challenge inspired them to do just a little better than they had ever done before.
