In 1939, when thousands of English children were evacuated from London during the blitz, the authorities thought they were doing the very best for those children by making them physically safe. It was discovered later, however, that the children, especially the smaller ones, suffered severe emotional disturbances from being removed from their parents' companionship and love. Though they were safe physically, they were in real trouble emotionally.
