In 1198 Saladin conveyed the traditional site of the Ascension to his Muslim followers, so it has been in their possession ever since. You wouldn't believe what an ugly shrine it is, this simple, round mosque on top of the Mount of Olives, surrounded by a wall and open only at the times the Arab guardian is available. A "kissing" camel stands outside, ready for the photographers. Only Luke mentions the Ascension of Jesus. It may have taken place on Easter Day, but, liturgically, it's celebrated forty days after Easter.
