You are rich!

What does it mean to be rich? (get responses) Do you think you're rich? (responses) Why or why not? (responses) Well, no matter how much stuff you have -- and no matter how much more you want -- you are rich. Our Bible verse says that we were born with nothing. That means that everything we have right now is a gift from God. God has blessed you with all sorts of gifts. He has blessed all of us, and we should learn to be content with what we have. He will always take care of us and give us just what we need.
The problem comes when we forget how rich we really are. People get into trouble when they want more and more stuff. Our Bible passage says that "those who want to be rich fall into temptation" (v. 9). People can do crazy things when they get greedy. Another verse says that "in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains" (v. 10b).
There are so many people in this world with less than what you and I have. Sure, there are people who have more than us, but so what? We've got all that we really need. We should share what we have with others. We should share the things we have with people who are less fortunate than us. That's what this Bible lesson is encouraging us to do.
So, instead of worrying about how much you don't have, spend some time counting your blessings. Ask God to help you be content with the things you do have, and ask him to show you how you can share these things with others. Remember: once you had nothing. Now you are rich!
Prayer: Thank you, God, for all your many blessings. Help us appreciate the things we have and learn how to share with those around us. Amen.
