You are beloved!
Children's sermon
Object:
Gather around the baptismal font if it is possible.
Otherwise take a bowl of water with a shell and baptismal napkin,
etc., as you gather with the children.
Have you ever heard a voice from heaven? I can't say that I
have. I would be impressed to hear such a voice. When Jesus was
baptized, a voice spoke that said, "This my Son, the Beloved."
Wow! Wouldn't that be neat?
Baptism is neat! It is important. In Baptism God points to you by name and says that you also are beloved. You are an important person. God knows you and loves you and calls you by name.
Can you tell me what we do at baptisms? (Let them answer. Then go through the motions of a real baptism. Let the children feel the water. Tell them that God approves of baptism and affirms the person being baptized just as God called Jesus "the Beloved.")
Every person who is baptized is an important, beloved child of God. We may not hear a voice from heaven when someone is baptized, but we know God knows and loves us. God loves Jesus and God loves you!
Dear God: We are greatly loved. Thank you for loving us so much. Amen.
