The word of God
Children's sermon
Object:
a Bible and a science textbook
Good morning! Today is a special Sunday for us. Can anybody
tell me why this is a special Sunday? (Let them answer.) Today is
Reformation Sunday. This is the day when we remember the events
that happened way back in the sixteenth century which got the
church back on track after it had wandered away from the truth.
In those days, the leaders of the church no longer accepted this
Bible as God's word (show the Bible).
In our day there are still a lot of people who don't accept
this book (show the Bible again) as the word of God. They will
take a book like this (show the textbook) and accept everything
in it as being the truth, but do you know what? This book is full
of man's ideas, and a lot of them are just wrong. When I was your
age, many of the things I was taught in school as absolute truth
from textbooks like this turned out to be wrong. I'm sure that a
lot of things that are being taught today will also be found to
be wrong as we learn new things.
But this book is God's word, and it is never wrong because
God knows everything. If you have a choice between believing this
book (show the Bible) or this one (show the textbook), which one
are you going to believe? (Let them answer.) Of course, you will
believe the Bible because we know that it is true and accurate.
That's a big part of what the Reformation was all about. Martin
Luther and the other reformers wanted people to believe what the
Bible said and not what people taught if people were teaching
things that were contrary to the truth of the Bible.
Let's thank God for providing brave, faithful men like
Martin Luther who reformed the church and brought us back to the
truth.
Dear God: We thank You so much for giving us men like Martin
Luther and the others who reformed the church and affirmed the
truth of Your holy word. Amen.
