Witness To The Saving Work Of Jesus
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
a Christian bumper sticker
The Point: as Jesus ascends to heaven we are left to be his witnesses in the world
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word together.
Today we celebrate the ascension of Jesus into heaven. Luke in our Bible reading tells us that Jesus raised his hands and blessed the disciples who were gathered around him. As he blesses them, Jesus ascends into heaven. Just before this moment Jesus told the disciples that with the help of the Holy Spirit, they were to be his witnesses to the world they lived in. They would tell the world about Jesus. They would be witnesses to the ministry of Jesus, his life, death, and resurrection. Jesus came not to condemn us but to save us. What a great message to share with all people.
This morning I brought with me a bumper sticker. (show children) It looks like a fish doesn’t it? It has become a symbol of being a Christian. I have a sticker just like this on my car bumper. It is one way to show you are a witness for Jesus. That means that I need to drive my car in a way that gives honor to Jesus. Jesus wants us to be his witnesses. People need to know about Jesus. If we are not witnesses for Jesus someone may not receive Jesus as their Savior. But we need more than a bumper sticker to be good witnesses for Jesus. Our very lives, our words and actions, need to help others encounter the forgiveness and love of Jesus. If we are faithful in our prayers, in attending Sunday school and worship, if the Bible becomes a part of our daily reading, and if we seek the power of the Holy Spirit, then even when we are not aware of it, our lives will give witness to Jesus, God’s only Son.
Today, we hear about Jesus ascending to the right hand of God where he has authority over all the earth. We are left to be his witnesses in the world.
Prayer: Let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Jesus you came to deliver us from our sins. Forgive us and renew us in the gift of the Holy Spirit. As a part of your family, Jesus, help us to be good and faithful witnesses to your saving love. In the name of our Savior Jesus we pray. Amen.
