Who will do the work?
Children's sermon
Object:
several decks of cards in a loose pile
Listen to today's verse. (Read the above scripture.) For today's sermon I want to talk about this verse using this deck of cards. (At this point, "accidentally" spill the cards in a mess on the floor.) Oh, no! I've spilled all the cards! I really needed them for my lesson today, but now they're all in a big mess. (Sit on the floor and look exasperated. Begin picking them up slowly and see if any of the children offer to help you.) Now I've got a big job to do, but I am going to need help to get it done in time to teach today's lesson. (If they do not offer, ask a few children to help you. Clean up your cards.)
Whew. What a lot of work! Thanks for your help. It was a really big job, but God found a way for the work to get done. You know, that's just like our scripture today. (Read the verse again.) Our verse talks about a big job that needs to be done and how there's not enough people to do it. Have you ever felt that way? What does our verse say to do when you are in a situation like that? "Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." Ask God for help.
There are two things we can learn from our verse today. First, ask God for help when you are in a situation that seems too big for you to do alone. Don't try to do things alone, and trust that God has a way to solve any problem.
Second, be helpful when others are in situations too big for them. If there is work to be done, ask God how you can help. Maybe you are the person needed to get the job done. Be ready to be helpful and eager to serve God when he needs you.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for sending me helpers when I needed them today. I believe that you will help me when I need it. Teach us to be helpful, too, so that we can serve others. Amen.
