Who Is Greatest?
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
an apron
The Point: in God’s kingdom the greatest is a servant of all
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God's word together.
Can you tell what I am wearing today? (let the children respond) It is an apron. When someone is preparing food to serve others, they may wear an apron. It keeps their clothes clean if they spill food in preparation or in serving. Because it is used in preparing and serving food to others, an apron has become a symbol of service.
Jesus talked about service in our Bible reading. He said, “For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves” (Luke 22:27).
Jesus is God’s Son who has come to us from heaven. He is truly the greatest of us all. But Jesus isn’t sitting at the table, he is serving his disciples. You might say that Jesus is wearing an apron because he is serving his followers. The Son of God didn’t come to be served but to serve.
Because Jesus came to us, everything has changed. Before he came to earth, we tried to be children of God, but we continually failed. We just could not be good enough. No matter how hard we tried, we kept failing to keep the rules that God has commanded. On our own we were lost and without hope. Then Jesus came not to be served by us but to serve us, so that with his help we could become children of God. Jesus served us by giving his life for us so that our sinfulness would be forgiven. What we couldn’t do on our own, we can now do with Jesus’ help. With Jesus we are forgiven and given the hope of eternal life. Because he came to serve, we are able to be a part of God’s family.
If Jesus was willing to serve us in order to save us, we should be willing to be servants of all that others might know our Savior Jesus too.
Prayer: Let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Jesus, because you were willing to serve instead of being served, we can be a part of your family. Help of Jesus to receive your serving grace and to be our servant to others that your kingdom may spread. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
