What's your treasure?
Children's sermon
Object:
a toy boat
Today we are going to use our imaginations. (Hold up the boat.) See this boat? Close your eyes and imagine that you are on this boat in the middle of the ocean. You have everything you love with you. All the things that are most important to you in the whole world are right there in that boat. Maybe your boat is small, because you only have a few things that matter. Maybe your boat is huge because you have so much stuff that you love! Now. Somebody tells you that there's only room for you to keep one thing. All the rest of your stuff has to be thrown over the side. Open your eyes.
If you can only keep one thing, what would you keep? (Speak with the children for a few moments about this. Learn what is special to them.) I would have a really hard time making this decision, because I have a lot of things that are special to me. What about my family? What about my toys? What about my money? What about my clothes? It would be really hard to decide.
The Bible verse today is really interesting. In it Jesus says, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." This means that you can tell a lot about people by seeing what's most important to them. What if you loved your money more than your family? That would say something about you, wouldn't it? What if you loved your stuff more than your friends? That would say something about you too.
Jesus wants us to make careful decisions about the things that are important to us. The things that matter to us are our treasures. He wants to make sure that our treasures are the right kinds of things. Think about what's most important to you. Are the treasures of your heart the right things? How can you know for sure? Spend some time with God and ask him. He will help you make the right decisions about the treasures of your heart.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us know how to love the right things. Show us what should be most important to us. Amen.
