What is perfect?
Children's sermon
Object:
the church organist, a beautiful ring worn by a lady, and a well-known Sunday school teacher
Good morning, boys and girls. Do you know what you can never be? (let them answer) Those are pretty good answers but the real answer is, "You will never be perfect!" Has anyone ever told you that you cannot be perfect?
Some things are pretty close to perfect. Let's listen to some music. (have everyone listen to the organist, then have the organist come to the group) ___________, your music was wonderful. I love to come to church and listen to you play. You played something pretty difficult, didn't you? (let him/her answer) Here is the real question, "Was it perfect?" Do you think anyone can play a perfect piece of music? (let him/her answer)
Next, I asked our friend, ________, to come up and show us her beautiful ring. (show the ring) Isn't it wonderful? (let them answer) ________, do you enjoy wearing this ring? (let her answer) Would you trade this for another ring? (let her answer) Is this ring perfect? (let her answer) It is very important to you and beautiful to wear, but it is not perfect, is it? Is there any ring that is absolutely perfect? (let her answer) I don't think so.
We have heard wonderful music and seen a beautiful ring, but neither one has been perfect. Let's see if there is a perfect person. I have asked a great Sunday school teacher to come forward. Almost every child in our church has been in __________'s class. She is a wonderful person, with great patience. She knows all about the Bible. She has a wonderful family and does so many kind things. If there is one person in our church that is perfect, it will be __________. Do you enjoy teaching Sunday school? (let her answer each question) Do you love all of the children? Do you pray and read your Bible every day? Are you perfect? Are you sure that you are not perfect? Do you know anyone who was, is, and always will be, perfect? Jesus is perfect? Has he always been perfect? Who made Jesus perfect? God made Jesus perfect and he will always be perfect. All of the rest of us are not perfect. Will Jesus make us perfect when he welcomes us into heaven? He will. All of us will be perfect when Jesus makes us perfect. This is wonderful news.
The next time we hear great music, see a beautiful ring, or even talk to a wonderful Christian, we will know that nothing is perfect here on earth, including you and me. But someday, we will be perfect, when Jesus brings us into his holy kingdom. Amen.
