Whoever welcomes you, welcomes me... (v. 40a)
Good Morning boys and girls,
I am so happy to see you today. (Presenter cites an example or two why he/she is happy.)
How are you? (children respond) Isn't it a great feeling to be loved and welcomed?
When Jesus was sending his disciples out to their mission, he told them,“Whoever welcomes you, welcomes me.” Jesus knew that sometimes the disciples would not be welcomed. So they needed a welcoming word of encouragement.
It's fun to be welcomed. When a playmate or schoolmate welcomes you into their group it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. When you started school your teacher or principle welcomed you. When came to this church you were welcomed. And every time you are welcomed it is like Jesus is welcoming you.
Are there ways we can welcome neighbors to our church? How do we begin to welcome strangers into our lives? Do you know of people who are strangers who are waiting to be invited and loved and accepted? (Children may have some ideas)
Jesus said “and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these...will not lose their reward.” (talk about the joy in giving a cup of cold water to a hot thirsty person) The best cup of all is the cup Jesus gave his disciples and to us at the Lord's Supper.
Let's practice welcoming.
How many of you children know how to smile? (children answer)
Let's practice smiling. (Presenter makes a game of who has the largest smile etc.)
Now let's practice hugging. First hug yourself. Now hug someone near you.
Next let us practice giving a cup of something delicious like a glass of lemonade or cup of chocolate milk to a needy person. Make someone feel welcome today. You can do it.
Then you are welcoming Jesus too.
Prayer: Thank you Jesus for welcoming me into your family. Thank you for people who welcome me into their lives like parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents and siblings. Amen.
