Unity, Jesus Prayer For Us
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
three strands of yarn
The Point: Jesus prays for unity among his followers
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word.
Today I brought with me three strands of yarn. (show children) Here is one strand. Can someone break it? (let children respond; have a child try) That wasn’t easy but you can break a single strand of yarn. Now, let me take the other two strands of yarn and braid the three of them together. The braiding has united the three strands as one. Now try to break the braided yarn. (let child try)The united three strands are too strong to break.
I think that is what Jesus had in mind when he prayed for his followers. In our Bible reading we hear Jesus pray for all his followers that they might come to complete unity. What unites us together is our faith in Jesus. Jesus prayed: “May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”
Jesus wants us to be united because it will strengthen our faith. And when our faith is united in Jesus, we will reflect Jesus’ love inviting others to join us. So are you helping to bring unity to Jesus followers, unity in his church? I believe Jesus showed us how we can support unity in his church. We can pray for each other. We can always speak well of others choosing to see what is good in one another. We can forgive as Jesus has forgiven us. We can be willing to help where we can and without expecting to be honored for it.
As Jesus’ church we are stronger and reflect the love Jesus better when we are united.
Prayer: Let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Jesus, you prayed for us to be united as your church. Help us to do those things that will unite us and that will share your love with one and other. In the name of our Savior Jesus we pray. Amen.
