Understanding comes from God
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Understanding what God is telling us in His
word is extremely important for everyone. We need to let our
children know that understanding the Bible requires the help of
the Holy Spirit. As we read and study, we need to be praying
constantly that the Holy Spirit will enlighten us so we will
understand God's word.
*Write some very unusual and difficult words on the board or
easel and ask if anyone can tell what they mean. When they can't
do so, have them use a dictionary to look up the words to learn
their meaning. Then talk about how, just as we needed to go to
another source to learn the meaning of the words, we sometimes
need to go to the Holy Spirit to help us understand God's words
in the Bible.
*Read Ephesians 2:8-9 and ask the children to write down
what they think it means. If the children are quite young, ask
them to tell you what it means. When several have read what they
wrote or talked about it, say a prayer asking the Holy Spirit to
lead you to an understanding of this scripture. Then explain that
the passage means we are saved by what God has done for us and
not by anything that we do. Lead them to see the importance of
asking God to help us understand the Bible.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Ask if any of the children can speak in a language other
than English. If so, have them say a few sentences and then
interpret what they said in that language. If nobody has another
language, have something from a different language written down
on the board or easel and interpret that. Talk about how, just as
we need to have someone who knows the language interpret for us,
so also we sometimes need to have God help us understand His
word. He is the author. He knows what is meant by what is
written.
