Children's sermon

Object:
Rocks that are sprayed painted gold as well as two plain rocks, a clue on a 3x5 card that says, "Go play some piano."
Have you ever been on a treasure hunt? You are given clues along the way with hopes at the end you will find a treasure. Would you like to do a mini treasure hunt this morning? Here's the first clue. (Give the 3x5 card to the child to read out loud.) It says that you should go play some piano. (Have a bag or box of painted gold rocks at the piano.) Wow! You have found the treasure! Can you show and give each child a gold rock?
Today our scripture is about treasures. In Luke 12:33 it talks about how thieves can come near our treasures or our treasures can be destroyed. People treasure different things but those things can become very important to us causing us to spend more and more money and time with them. But Jesus warned us in Luke 12:34 ," for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." He tells us to have treasure in heaven. We need to treasure things that can last forever and are of value to God like caring for people and helping others. These gold rocks may look valuable but really they are just plain old rocks. (Show the two plain rocks.) Likewise the treasures people have on this earth may look valuable but in the end, they are like just plain old rocks.
How can we apply this to our lives?
How we spend our money often shows what we treasure. Make sure your treasure is better than old rocks, make your treasure count for eternity. Use your treasures to bless others.
