Transfigured!
Children's sermon
Object:
an envelope and a mailing label
Good morning, boys and girls. Do you think it would have been exciting to live with Jesus and be one of his friends? (let them answer) If you had been one of Jesus' disciples, what would you want to do with Jesus? (let them answer) Good answers. It would have been very exciting to do things with Jesus.
Today we are going to talk about an experience that only Peter, James, and John shared with Jesus. Right in front of their eyes they watched Jesus change from what he always looked like into something so bright and white that the Bible called him dazzling white. Jesus was brighter than anything the disciples had ever seen on earth.
It is amazing how certain things change. For instance, everyone has seen an envelope. It is just a plain envelope. Nothing fancy about it and there are lots of other envelopes that look just like this one. But I can change this envelope into something very special.
Watch this! (take the mailing label out of your pocket and allow them to read the name on it) Does anyone know who this is? (let them answer) This is a close friend of mine and I want to send him a letter. I put the letter in the envelope, and now the envelope becomes something very special. It changes into an adventure. It is going somewhere special because it has a name and an address on it. This little label makes the difference.
Something special happened to Jesus that morning when he climbed the mountain with Peter, James, and John. In just a flash there was something different about Jesus. One moment he was standing here looking like he always did and the next moment he was dazzling bright. Peter was the only one who could say anything. He knew that Jesus had been filled with God and was made dazzling bright. He also saw some prophets standing there who had been dead for hundreds of years. Their names were Moses and Elijah.
Peter didn't want to leave; he wanted the moment to last forever. Everything had changed in front of their own eyes. Peter knew he was in the presence of God and so did the other two disciples. It was an amazing day.
Maybe the next time you see someone put a name on an envelope you will think about this day, called Transfiguration Day. A name and address makes a folded piece of paper into something special. Jesus was special that day when God filled him with his Spirit and changed him into someone dazzling white.
