Time passes
Children's sermon
Object:
An hourglass (a small kitchen timer or one from a game is
perhaps most readily available)
Good morning! Before people had clocks to keep time, they used
what is called an "hourglass." It looked very much like this --
which is a smaller version of an hourglass. The sand runs from
the top to the bottom. How long do you suppose it takes all the
sand in a true hourglass to get to the bottom? (Let them answer.)
It would take an hour! That is why it was called an "hourglass."
Sometimes today people use a smaller version like this one which takes only three minutes to run from one side to the other.
On this day, sometimes you see pictures of an hourglass to remind us that time passes just like sand passing from the top to the bottom. Someday all our days will be used up and the last day will come and we will die.
We know some good news about that day. We know that Jesus loves us and has prepared a place for us. That is the promise of heaven. So time may pass, but we know that God is our God in time and even when time is over.
I'm so very glad that God has prepared a place for us in heaven.
Dear God: Thank you for giving us heaven. Help us to do your work while we have the time. Bless this new year and help us to take good care of the time you give us. Amen.
