Strong like a rock
Children's sermon
Object:
a glass of water and a tray with a large rock and a pile of sand
Good morning, children! It's good to see you again. Today's lesson is a fun one. I'll bet you've even tried something like this yourselves. (show them the tray) See what I've brought today? I've got a big rock and a pile of sand. Which is stronger? (see what they think) What do you think will happen if I pour this glass of water on them? (responses)
Let's see. (slowly pour the water on the rock and let it run off; now pour the water on the sand and watch it erode the pile) There's a big difference between the two, don't you think? The water destroyed the pile of sand, but it didn't do anything to the rock except make it wet. The rock is much, much stronger than the sand. If you were going to build a house, which one would you build it on? Of course: the rock!
In today's lesson Jesus tells us that a wise man will build his house on a rock. A wise man builds his house on ground that will be strong and safe. A foolish man will build his house on sand. It might look very beautiful, but when the rains come the house will only wash away. A house that is built on a rock will stand firm and strong. Jesus says that if we listen to his words and follow his teaching we will be just like that wise man, because the word of Jesus is strong like a rock. It will hold us up and keep us from falling apart when things in our lives get hard.
We all need to pray and ask for help to live wisely and to make the right decisions in our lives. If we do that, our lives will be more like the rock than like this washed out pile of sand.
Prayer: Jesus, please help us listen to your teaching and live as you ask. Teach us to live wisely and not foolishly. Amen.
