A sign from God
Children's sermon
Object:
A dove hand puppet or Christmas ornament
When Jesus was baptized, the Spirit of God came down upon
him. The Bible says the Spirit was like a dove. (Here you can act
out what happened using the dove coming down and alighting on one
of the children. You might even have a "voice" prearranged to
speak the words "You are my son [daughter], the Beloved; with you
I am well pleased.") We often use a dove to show God's Spirit
even today. (If there is a representation of a dove in your
church, point that out to your children now. Explain the
symbolism of the dove and how it relates to Jesus' baptism.)
So as Jesus was baptized, something like a dove came and landed on him. Furthermore, there was a voice from heaven that said, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." The dove and the voice were signs that Jesus was truly God's son.
Today, whenever we baptize a person, the baptism itself is a sign. What kind of sign do you think baptism is for us today? (Let them answer.) We could say it is a sign of God's presence among us. It is a sign that God is with this person being baptized. It is a sign that God's Spirit is among us as we worship. It is a sign that we also belong to God. Jesus was God's son. We are also God's beloved daughters and sons. God calls us his children. Baptism is a sign that we belong to God's family -- the church.
In baptism we have water and the word of God. We do not have the Spirit descending like a dove and neither do we have a voice from heaven telling us that we are God's beloved sons and daughters. But we have the baptism itself as a sign for us to remember God's activity and presence among us.
I'm glad God has given us this wonderful sign. We can trust God and know that God is true to his word with us.
Dearest Lord God: Thank you for the sign of your presence among us and your love for us. Thank you for our family -- the church. Amen.
