Sharing God's love
Children's sermon
Object:
some jelly beans
Simon answered, "I suppose the one for whom he canceled the greater debt."
And Jesus said to him, "You have judged rightly." (v. 43)
Good morning, boys and girls. Does God know who loves him with all their heart? (let them answer) Does God love people who are sinners, as much as he loves people that love him? (let them answer) If you had a bunch of jelly beans and you wanted to share them with your friends, how many jelly beans would you give to each friend? (let them answer) If a bad guy was there and he told you that he was really sorry for all of the bad things he had done to you in the past, would you give him a jelly bean? Would you give him more than one? (let them answer) Would you give him more than the other friends? (let them answer) How do you think your other friends would feel if they knew that you were giving him more jelly beans than you gave them? (let them answer)
There is a story in the Bible about Jesus meeting with some ministers over lunch. They wanted to talk to Jesus and find out what he wanted to teach. A woman came in and knelt down near Jesus and began to wash his feet with her tears. She dried them with her hair. Everyone knew the woman. She had a bad reputation and they tried to stay away from her. But Jesus did not say one bad word to her. The ministers were really upset with the woman. She had come into where she did not belong and washed the feet of their guest. They wondered why Jesus did not tell her to get away from him.
Jesus knew what they were thinking. He told them that she was doing what they should have done for a guest. He said she was showing to everyone how sorry she was for her sins. She wanted the forgiveness of God. Isn't that great? She knew she was wrong and she wanted God to forgive her for all of the ugly things she had done. Jesus did forgive her, but the ministers were really upset. This is the way God works. God loves all of us. When sinners come to Jesus and tell him how sorry they are for what they have done then Jesus is very happy.
The next time you have some jelly beans I want you to think about making friends with someone who has hurt you. Tell them that you forgive them and tell them that you will be glad to share the love of God with them so that they will know a lot of happiness. Amen.
