From rough wood a treasure comes
Children's sermon
Object:
a piece of lumber and a finished piece of wood in the form of a chest or jewelry box
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about something that makes us sad. What makes you sad? (let them answer) I need to talk to you about dying. Do you know about dying? (let them answer) Things die all of the time, don't they? Flowers die, bugs die, fish die, and a lot of other things die. It doesn't make us happy when our flowers or fish die, but we get over it, don't we?
Today I want to talk about Jesus' dying and our dying. When Jesus died, it was a special dying. It was special because it was part of God's plan. When Jesus died, God said that was enough dying and that everyone who died would live again because of Jesus.
Let's see if I can show you what I mean. I have a piece of wood. It doesn't look special because it is just an old piece of wood. I also have this beautiful piece of wood that does look special. Did you know that this beautiful box once looked like this piece of wood? (let them answer) It did! How can wood change like this? (let them answer) It takes a lot of work, using a lot of tools, to make a piece of wood look like this beautiful box.
Do you remember I said we were going to talk about dying and death? (let them answer) Well, all of us are kind of like that old piece of wood. We were born and we grow up knowing that someday we are going to die. God knows this also and he loves us very much. He asked Jesus his own son to die for us. It was a very sad death. But God worked with Jesus' death and changed Jesus into our Savior. After Jesus died, he was resurrected into a brand new body. All of the bad things that happened to Jesus were gone. Once we were so sad for Jesus but now we are very happy about God's plan.
Here is the best part of the plan. Because Jesus died and took away our sins, we will also have a brand new body. All of the bad things that happened to us will be gone.
So the next time you see an old piece of wood just lying around being ugly, I want you to think about how someone can make it into a beautiful box. And when you think of the beautiful box, you can also think about the beautiful body God is going to make for you after you die and are living with Jesus.
