Remembering
Children's sermon
Object:
a letter or note from either your father or your mother and if not one of them then from someone close to you like a brother or sister
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me ... but if you
do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. (vv. 10-11)
Good morning, boys and girls. The other day I found a letter that was written by my mother. (show them the letter) I just found it when I was looking through my desk. It is a wonderful letter and, after I read it a few times, I knew why I had kept it.
My mother was talking about many things in the letter. Some of them were about my father and some about my sister. But mostly she wrote to tell me how she hoped that I would follow the ways of Jesus. She wanted me to be kind to others, to help the poor, to visit lonely people, and to take very good care of my neighbors. I can remember my mother talking, even though she died a number of years ago. She was a wonderful mother and she learned many of the things she taught me from her mother and father and her grandparents.
I can see her face in my mind and I remember what good care she gave me when I was a young boy. I also remember growing up. Every week we went to church together with the rest of our family. She used to make out a list of people she wanted to invite over to our house to feed them a meal. She used to send me on errands for some of our neighbors who were older. When it snowed, my father and I would shovel our neighbor's walks and then come home and shovel our walks.
I can imagine her writing me this letter and hoping that I would still obey her like she wanted me to obey her as a child.
The reason I am telling you is so that you can do the same thing. Close your eyes and see if you can see a picture of your mother or dad. Think about all of the good things they have taught you to do. How many of you can see your mother with your eyes shut? (let them answer) Pretty neat, isn't it?
Jesus told his disciples that they should be able to see the face of God when they looked at his face. They should hear the Father speak when they listened to the voice of Jesus because the Father was speaking through him.
I don't have to hear my mother speak because I can read her letter or see pictures of her. Some of the pictures were taken in places where I remember exactly what she said.
When you worship Jesus you are worshiping God the Father and the Holy Spirit. They are one God.
The next time your mother writes you a note and you read it, close your eyes and see if you can see her speaking to you. Remember, also, that God the Father loves you and you can always remember what he teaches you. Amen.
