Protection
Children's sermon
Object:
a raincoat, a helmet, earplugs, and so forth (items that
help ensure our safety)
Good morning! This morning I wanted to make sure I would be
safe so I brought a raincoat -- just in case it rains. (Put it
on if you can.) If it rains, I'll have something to protect me
from the rain. I brought a helmet just in case something falls
from the sky. (Put it on if you can.) Do you think something
might fall from the sky? I doubt it, but -- just in case -- I've
got this helmet. And there might be a loud noise. To protect my
ears, I brought these ear protectors. (Put them on if you can.)
I brought some safety glasses in case something should fly up
suddenly and perhaps get in my eye. (Put them on if you can.)
Do you think I have enough protection? (Let them answer.) I
could put on more protective things such as shoulder pads like
football players use, or knee pads like skaters use. I could put
on more and more things to help protect myself. But would that
be wise? (Let them answer.) I don't think so!
The best protection I have is from God. I could wear all kinds of protective gear every day and still something could happen. Or, I could go around like usual knowing that God protects me from many dangers. I know this because of a prayer Jesus said for me -- and for you. Once Jesus prayed that God would protect all his followers -- like you and me!
I believe God is answering Jesus' prayer because I see evidence of God's protecting me throughout my life. Sometimes things happen that hurt me and I don't understand just why that happened, but I still believe God protects me.
But I do not do foolish things like not wear my seatbelt in the car or not wear my bicycle safety helmet when I go bicycle riding. Yet I know God is with me and protecting me.
Dearest God: Thank you for watching out for us. Amen.
Alternate: A map puzzle.
Show how the pieces of the puzzle fit together. In the same way people of God from all over the world (which the pieces themselves may symbolize) fit together in the family of God. Because all believe in Jesus, we have that unity.
