Our inheritance
Children's sermon
Object:
a will
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is a day we call All Saints' Day. Do
you know what a saint is? (Let them respond.) A saint is a person who has
been chosen by God to do something special. That would make each one of
us a saint! We have all been chosen to do something very special. We have
all been given something very special, to. It's a special gift. Sometimes
the Bible calls it an inheritance. Sometimes the Bible calls it having your
name written in the book of life. Those are hard things to understand. Let's
look at what I brought today. (Show the will.) It's called a will. People
write wills before they die. It's a special paper that says who you want to
inherit or have all your things after you die. When you inherit something it
is because someone chose you to have it. So your name is written on this
piece of paper and it says you were chosen to inherit something. What do
you think it is? (Let them respond.) What you have inherited is being part
of a special family. In the will it says that God chooses each one of us to
be part of God's family always and forever. On All Saints' Day we
remember that we are all chosen to be part of God's family forever.
If we are each chosen to be part of God's family forever, that means that all of those people who have died are still part of God's family, too. So on All Saints' Day we not only remember that we are saints, but also we remember all the saints who have died and gone to be with God.
So there are two kinds of saints. Can you remember the two kinds? (Let them respond.) There are saints who have died and gone to live with God. The other kind is each of us. We are living saints. We are all part of God's family forever. That's a pretty special gift!
