Our inheritance
Children's sermon
Object:
a family heirloom
Almost every family has something that is passed on within
the family. I have this (show them the family heirloom that is
yours and tell them something about it). Do you have something
that is in your family that once belonged to a grandmother or
grandfather or great-grandmother or great-grandfather? (Let them
answer.) We call these things our "inheritance." These are
things that are ours because we are related to the people they
once belonged to.
Today we learn of something that Jesus promised to all who
believe in him. Does anybody know what Jesus promised us? (Let
them answer.) He promised to all who believe in him the gift of
heaven.
Today is the first day of a new year -- 1998. There will be
many new things this year. For some of you there will be new
friends. There will be new birthdays. There will be new things
to do -- things you have never done before. There will be new
clothes. What other new things might come this year? (Let them
answer.)
But in addition to all the new things that come our way,
some old things will become ours. Just as this (family heirloom)
once belonged to someone else and is now mine, so we shall have
something that is old. It is a promise that is as old as the
Bible. In fact, it is a promise as old as creation itself. It
is the promise of heaven. That is our inheritance from Jesus.
So we can begin this new year with the hope of something new
that is ours because Jesus promised it to us.
Dearest Lord Jesus: Thank you for heaven. Amen.
