One pearl
Children's sermon
Object:
a pearl necklace or a picture of a pearl
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. (vv. 45-46)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today our gospel lesson talks about the kingdom of heaven. What do you think the kingdom of heaven is like? (allow answers)
In the gospel, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a lot of different things. One of the things he says is this: "The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it."
Imagine that. Imagine that you are looking for something very valuable. You search and search. You spend your whole life looking for this thing -- this most valuable, most precious pearl. (show necklace or photo) And then you find it. You find the most perfect pearl -- or maybe it is the most perfect diamond, or the most perfect flower, or whatever you are looking for. You find this perfect, beautiful thing. But it is very expensive. It is worth everything that you own. What would you do? This is what you have been looking for your whole life! It is perfect! It is beautiful! What will you do? (allow answers)
It might be hard for you to let go of all the wealth you have but when you see this beautiful thing, you realize that everything you have is worthless in comparison. What you have is just stuff. This pearl is so beautiful, so perfect, that you are willing to give up everything you have for it.
In our gospel, that is what the merchant does. When he finds this perfect pearl, he sells all of his things and buys this pearl.
The kingdom of heaven is beautiful and perfect like that pearl. It is such a beautiful, perfect, wonderful place that it makes us realize that the things we have on earth are... just things. Our real treasure is heaven. And it doesn't matter how much wealth, how much money, how many jewels we have on earth -- when we see the kingdom of heaven, all of that will wash away.
That doesn't mean we should not strive to do good things on earth. That doesn't mean we should stop showing our love for others through our actions. And that does not mean that earth is a bad place to be. But it does mean that we can rest easy knowing that there is something better waiting for us. Someday we will see that beautiful, perfect pearl that is the kingdom of heaven. (show necklace or photo) And it will be worth it. Amen.
