Gates of Heaven
Children's Activity
Teachers or Parents: The gospel, in the narrowest sense of its use, is the good news that Jesus died for our sins and because of what he did, we who believe are saved. There is no way we can ever relate this to our children too much. In fact, it needs to be repeated over and over again until they really understand that salvation is a gift of God, given to all who believe in Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
*Explain to the children that we are going to pretend that each of them has died and are now at the gates of Heaven. The leader will take the part of God, and as the children come to the gates, God will ask each of them, "Why should I let you into Heaven?" You might want someone to record the answers that they give so you can refer back to them. After everyone has come up and given an answer, discuss how many of the answers relate to something that they have done that should convince God to let them in. There will be many (perhaps all) answers that relate to their own good works. Then share the real "good news" that Heaven is a free gift to those who believe and is not earned, nor can it be earned, by our own works. Make sure they grasp this basic truth of Christianity firmly!
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Open with "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." Discuss how the first verse shows how Jesus paid for our sins.
