Good morning! I want to tell you a story this morning. Once
upon a time there was a good, kind king who wanted to give a big
party for all the people in his kingdom. He wanted to make this
party completely free to anybody in his kingdom who believed that
he loved them and cared about them. The king wrote a proclamation
inviting everyone who professed that they loved him and believed
in him. But this king had an evil minister who knew that most of
the people couldn't read, so he went about selling tickets to the
king's party to those who could pay, and most of the people
didn't know that the party was free. When those who bought
tickets tried to get into the party, they were rejected because
that was not the right way to get in. Do you think the king would
be unhappy about what that minister did? (Let them answer.)
In a way, that was what happened with the church many years
ago. God's word says clearly that He wants all those who love His
son Jesus and believe in him to come into Heaven and be with Him
there forever. But some men in the church withheld this
information from people and convinced them that they had to do a
lot of things the church wanted them to do in order to get into
Heaven. The Reformation that we are celebrating today brought
back the truth to the people and showed them that heaven is a
free gift to all who believe in Jesus and know that he paid for
our sins when he died on the cross. Do all of you know that this
is true? Do you know that Heaven is a free gift to those who
believe? (Let them answer.) That's good! Let's thank God for this
wonderful gift of eternal life.
Dear Father in Heaven: We thank You for loving us so much that
You gave Your only Son, Jesus, to die on a cross to pay for our
sins. We know that all who believe this are invited to the
heavenly party where we will be happy forever. Amen.
