Mary, Jesus' Mother
Children's sermon
Object:
the mothers in the congregation
The Point: We are blessed when we believe that God has made us his children
The Lesson: Welcome, girls and boys and thank you for sharing this time with me. Today I would like to begin in a very special way. Would all the mothers or those who have loved us as mothers please stand up? Wow! Look at all the mothers here today. We are so blessed to have mothers. While they are standing, let’s pray a prayer of blessing upon them.
Jesus, we give you thanks and praise to the mothers here today and especially for our own mothers. We ask you now to let your hand of blessing rest upon each of them. Bless them with true peace and love. Jesus we pray this blessing in your holy name. And all of God’s children say, “Amen.”
Thank you, mothers, for your ministry to our families. Please be seated.
Did you know that Jesus had a mother too? Her name was Mary. The Bible reading today tells us that Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth. In a couple of months Elizabeth would give birth to John the Baptist. We heard about John last week. John would help to prepare the way for Jesus’ ministry. When Elizabeth saw Mary she said, “Blessed are you among women.”
Mary was blessed because she believed that God would work through her to bring his Son into the World. As Jesus’ mother she became a blessing to all people as her son, Jesus, brought God’s amazing love to the world. Mary could have denied God’s gift and said, “Oh, I am not worthy.” She could have claimed all the credit herself, taking it away for God. Mary simply believed and trusted God and for that she was blessed.
When you believe and trust Jesus to work through you, you too will be blessed. When your faith makes Jesus real to another person, like Mary you too will be blessed. We are blessed when we believe that God has made us his children and will work through us.
As we continue to prepare for Christmas, we give thanks to our mothers and all people who have helped to make Jesus real to us. May they all be blessed.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Jesus, as we remember the faith of your mother, Mary, may you find that kind of faith in us. As your children of faith, use us to be blessings to the world. Lord Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
